ABSTRACT: Aerococcus viridans is an emerging pathogen for humans and livestock animals, mainly associated with genitourinary infections cases. Its occurrence in wild mammals has never been reported. The aim of this study was to determine the etiological agent clinical a case genital infection female African elephant (Loxodonta africana). Phylogenetic analysis antimicrobial susceptibility profile isolate were also addressed. animal presented frequent cases intermittent white secretion. Purulent secretion sampled submitted bacteriological exam. obtained thus identified by phenotypic molecular methods as A. found be similar human pathogenic isolates BLASTn phylogenetic analysis. sensitive almost all antimicrobials evaluated, presenting resistance ciprofloxacin norfloxacin. This first report tract elephant.

Loxodonta africana – African Elephant
Taxonomic notes: Preliminary genetic evidence suggests that there may be at least two species of African Elephant, namely the Savannah Elephant (Loxodonta africana) and the Forest Elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) (Roca et al. 2001, 2005). A third species, the West African Elephant, has also been postulated. The IUCN SSC African Elephant Specialist Group currently accepts the single species proposa...
متن کاملThe Release of a Captive-Raised Female African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) in the Okavango Delta, Botswana
Wild female elephants live in close-knit matrilineal groups and housing captive elephants in artificial social groupings can cause significant welfare issues for individuals not accepted by other group members. We document the release of a captive-raised female elephant used in the safari industry because of welfare and management problems. She was fitted with a satellite collar, and spatial an...
متن کاملElephant-Initiated Interactions with Humans: Individual Differences and Specific Preferences in Captive African Elephants (Loxodonta africana)
South Africa has seen a recent increase in the number of African elephants (Loxodonta africana) maintained in reserves and parks and managed in free contact, where they may spend a significant amount of time in close proximity to humans. This study investigates how individual elephants choose to initiate interactions with humans by examining whether interaction types and frequencies vary both b...

This paper presents a novel application of speech processing research, classification of African elephant vocalizations. Speaker identification and call classification experiments are performed on data collected from captive African elephants in a naturalistic environment. The features used for classification are 12 Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients plus log energy computed using a shifted fi...
